THE LADY WHO LIGHTING MANY LIVES THROUGH THE CHANGE
03rd, November 2017 - Social enterprise
A girl who born and bought up with her two brothers in the simple Bengali family long settled in Delhi had changed the life of children and empowered the women
Yes, Captain Indraani Singh started giving wings to the dreams of the children and started improving skills of a women and providing jobs to over 300 underprivileged women which could help them to make some products and get their earnings.
In 1989, she went to Toulouse, France, to train for flying the airbus 320 and became the first ever women in Asia to fly the aircraft. In 1995, she became the world’s first women commander on the wide-bodied Airbus 300.
She established an NGO, Literacy in India with three E’S (Educate, Empower and Employment) in 1996 to lift the unfortunate children and women out of the poverty and giving them a reason to smile. She started with 5 kids and now it had been reached to more than fifty thousand children, women and youths. Now there are 22 centers in India which is working for literacy in India.
Why she started literacy in India?
From her childhood the only thing stuck in her mind that while she can go to the schools, why can’t other kids on the streets go to school? Even the stories which she had heard from her father and mother that how the women worked very hard to manage their family impacted on thinking of Indraani about the poor kids and the women, from that day her dream is to see the literate India and even it is her personal mission.
She also started Indhacraft in 2005 which is a social initiative to educate women, empower and employ their skills for a brighter future. “Indha” means the broad base used for balancing several parts placed on top of one another, women carrying them on their heads is a common scenario in rural India. This balancing act is intertwined with their lives as women balance multiple roles.
The focus of Indhacraft is on corporate gifting. The organization has become a canvas for hundreds of women’s dreams, and caters to varied clients like Microsoft, MasterCard, World Bank etc.
Today Indha has completed over a decade of existence. It has increased the number of centers across India and employees about 320 artisans, making themselves- reliant and empowered.
For her services towards the society, she has been honored with International Congress for women’s Godfrey Philip special award for bravery in social cause, and women achievers award in 2009.
