In these neoteric times, we have women doing everything on par with men. Women can be found here, there and everywhere. Then why not entrepreneurs? Yes, setting up an enterprise sometimes might cost an arm and a leg but it’s worth it. We will have the contentment in making the world a better place with our integrity.
Why should only men be entrepreneurs? There are a lot of women with the can-do attitude. To inspire all the women who love to become Entrepreneurs here I write about Dr.Kamini Arvind Rao.
To be inspired by someone, one must know how their inspiration has achieved what they achieved.
Dr.Kamini A.Rao was born on 2nd of July 1953 to Mrs.Parimala Desai and Dr.P.R.Desai in Hyderabad. She was a young girl when they relocated to Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore. She is an alumni of Bishop Cotton girls’ high school. After her schooling, she went on to pursue Medicine in St. John’s medical college and Vani vilas in Bangalore. She, as a child was not someone who was head over heels for studies. One time, her parents received a complaint from Mathematics teacher which was like a blessing in disguise for her because it was then she decided to cross the bridge and started working hard. There was no stopping for her since then.
She has been to U.K. to gather further more medical degrees. In U.K. she has gained knowledge on Fetal Invasive Therapy from Professor Kypros Nicolaides. This was at King’s College School of Medicine, London. As they say the more, the better. She got herself trained in Laser Surgery from South Cleveland Hospital, Middlesbrough, U.K. This was under the guidance of Professor Ray Garry. Staying in U.K. was not a cakewalk for her. She faced many struggles and she took the help of her friends for accommodation. But her determination was spot on. That is responsible for her success in life. One example to prove her diligence is that she attended her semester exams even after being advised to not move a muscle as she got her back surgery done. Yet, being brilliant that she is, she performed in an exemplary fashion in the examinations.
In one of her interviews, she said: “It was in my hands to happily settle down in U.K. but I chose a different path.” She never ever wanted to be a run-of-the-mill doctor. So if you have the goal it is not enough, you must also have the courage to work towards the goal no matter what happens.
She decided to be an entrepreneur in India, her home land. She had a lot of courage to take up IVF (In vitro fertilization) as this was not a popular concept in India in those times. She, on finding out the virgin fertility market in India and also to technologically advance our country took up IVF. She took up the job of training and making people learn about IVF. She has trained a lot of medical professionals mostly from tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
She started Bangalore Assisted Conception Center [BACC] in the year 1989.This is now known as Milann. This deals with the people who are not able to conceive. There is no exaggeration in calling her the mother of IVF in India because of the efforts she has made. She, with her dedication, proved that she is a class apart from other doctors.Even after giving birth to children, she continued to study which is quite an example for actions speak louder than words. She has proved her merit time and again through the growth of Milann.
Her personal life:
Dr.Kamini Rao is married to Dr.Arvind whom she met at National College. Even though they belonged to the same college, they hardly spoke to each other. All the credits go to their common friend who told Dr.Kamini to approach Dr.Arvind. Their friendship blossomed into love and they both got married on a felicitous day. It was the day Kamini Desai became Kamini Arvind Rao. They have two children Sidharth and Vyshnavi. Dr.Vyshnavi says “When mom is in the hospital she is a doctor and when she is in the house she is a lovely mother and a grandmother.”This drives home the point that she gives an equal importance to her personal and professional life as well.
More about Milann in a nutshell:
She started Milann (formerly known as BACC) with very few people to assist her. She requested her father to provide her with a doctor. As a result of this, Dr.Anu kutoor teamed up with Dr.Kamini. In Dr.Anu’s words: Dr.Kamini is someone who never takes no for an answer. Like everyone else, she faced struggle due to lack of patients in the beginning. She later took a loan from Karnataka State Financial Corporation for getting the state of the art technology. This is how she broke the back of the beast and now Milann is at its zenith. They offer services which include Gynae Endoscopy, High-risk obstetrics, Third party reproduction, Infertility Management among various others. Milann has a core team of highly qualified and staunch doctors. The word Milann can be interchangeably used with extreme care, fantabulous technology. This is how other hospitals and Milann are like night and day.Milann has its centers spread across the country in places like New Delhi, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Mumbai along with Bangalore. Around 75,000 surgeries were performed in Milann.
Milann, the leading fertility center, is the first hospital to get the green signal for uterus transplant in India from the Indian Council of Medical Research. Milann is given the permission for uterus transplantation in two female patients.
She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Infertility and fetal medicine, a member of the National Apex Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy.
She has a bundle of Awards and recognitions which include the following (in no particular order):
· Padma Shri Awards in 2014
· She is the one behind the birth of first SIFT (Semen Intra Fallopian Transfer) baby in India.
· She has setup South India’s first semen bank.
· She is the master mind behind the birth of South India’s first baby through Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection and also through Laser Assisted Hatching.
· Rajyotsava Award from the state Karnataka.
· Vidya Ratan Award.
· B.C.Roy District Award from the district Shimoga in Karnataka. To Name a few.
The awards are just like adding jewels to the crown that she is wearing. She feels “If I can do it, then everyone can.” She is absolutely right. If you have the zeal, zest and zing to do something, you can achieve it.
Age is just a number for her. She, even at the age of 64 still strives for development. She is the paradigm of an impeccable doctor, women and a human being.
